Our favorite type of remodels are the ones that turn previously unusable spaces into multi-functional rooms for our clients. Today’s laundry room renovation before and after does just that! At our Nellie Gail project, a small unused bedroom was repurposed into a bright upstairs laundry room and craft space that our clients use every single day. Keep scrolling to see what this space looked like before and to read more about the transformation!
Before

Our client really wanted a space for laundry upstairs. With all of the kids’ bedrooms on the second floor, having an easily accessible laundry space makes daily chores that much more convenient. There was also a need for an office space, as well as a craft room for wrapping gifts and working on fun projects with the kids. Our challenge as designers was to create a space that could encompass all of our clients’ needs in a beautiful and functional way!
After

The new space is wrapped in custom cabinetry, perfectly suited to all of this room’s different purposes. It utilizes as much storage space as possible for all of our client’s brightly colored beads, ribbons, paper, and various other craft supplies. Even with perfect organization, closed cabinet doors allows the space to look neat and uniform. We replaced the outdated carpet with a two-tone terracotta stone floor. You may recognize the material from the pantry and mudroom downstairs!
We also added an island that projects into the space for more counter space. It serves as the perfect gift-wrapping station with built-in rods to store all of their favorite wrapping papers. On the opposite side of the space, double stacked washers and dryers ensure that lots of laundry can get done in here, too. We also added a custom pull-down drying rack that can be pulled down while in use and easily tucked away the rest of the time. Drying racks can take up so much space. So, this was a great way for us to add a functional element without using up precious square footage.

Our client’s favorite color is purple, so during the design process we decided to go for it and paint the entire space this lovely light purple. We had originally selected a soft blue color. However, this purple adds an unexpected touch of color while still remaining timeless. We tied the hue in with a custom gingham pinboard and patterned Roman shades with touches of purple and turquoise.
Underneath the pinboard, we added a kid-friendly desk area with three stools. The little ones can tuck in to work on projects or do homework while the adults work and do laundry!

At the end of the day, we wanted to create a space our clients could use every day. The result was this fun office-craft-laundry room where every element serves a unique purpose!
