It’s time for part three of our Nellie Gail project reveal, and we couldn’t be more excited about the spaces we’re sharing today. We’re diving into the beautiful family room, playful kids’ game suite, and functional mudroom-laundry space. Next week, we’ll be sharing more of the fun kids’ in this Laguna Hills family home! Without further ado, let’s get into today’s reveal!
Family Room
Contrary to its name, the family room was really designed for the parents. The neighboring game suite is more kid-friendly, but more on that later! This bright layered family room was designed to be a retreat hangout space for the adults while the kids are in bed. It’s a play on prettier elements, with lots of special details throughout.

The plaid sofa anchors the space and provides lots of functional seating, while a gilded side table adds a feminine touch. The built-ins on either side of the marble slab fireplace have the most beautiful reeded details in stain-grade white oak.

The eclectic gallery wall behind the sofa was co-curated by us and the client. The goal was to make every piece feel collected, so each piece has a meaningful tie to the family. From vintage portraits of grandparents to art prints from places they’ve traveled together, everything has its meaning. All of the frames were sourced from a local antique shop in New Hampshire, where our clients spend time every year. Fun fact: The horseshoe on the wall was found in the backyard during construction! We framed it and added it to this gallery wall to pay homage to the stables that used to be on property years ago.

Game Room
Next up in our Laguna Hills family home reveal, the game room! Separate from the main living areas, this space is a zone for all of the kids where the family could have game nights, watch movies, and just spend quality time together.

A big television is the focal point of the seating area, and an extended built-in provides lots of storage. The leather ottoman is kid-friendly, but can still be a flat surface for board games. Behind the sofa, we added a console table with chairs for even more seating – Perfect for coloring or doing homework while a movie is on in the background.

In this space, we were excited to play with colors, patterns, and darker tones than the rest of the home. A fun plaid swivel chair ties in all of the hues we used in the space, and we used the same fabric to make a few custom pillows for the sectional. Again, much of the decor and details on the built-in shelves have a sentimental tie to the family – The home is full of personal touches galore!

Mudroom
The downstairs mudroom serves as both a traditional mudroom and a laundry room. We added a wall of custom cabinetry as “locker space” for kids storage. It’s the perfect landing zone when kids come home from sports, school, and more. Between the lockers, we used shaker pegs to create space for backpacks and jackets to be hung as well. Overall, it’s a really functional space for our clients and their lifestyle!

While the space is ultra-functional, that doesn’t mean it’s short on style! A diamond two-tone floor in a concrete tile adds a fun pattern underfoot, and pretty cabinetry details and millwork tie in the traditional aesthetic of the rest of the home. Lastly, an accent greige” paint color (one of our favorite hues of the moment) adds contrast.

With that, we’re over halfway through our Nellie Gail project reveal! If you missed part one or part two, head there to see more of the downstairs living spaces. Starting next week, we’re heading upstairs to dive into the kids rooms and main bedroom suite. You won’t want to miss it!
