We have a special one for you all today! After revealing our new #MGDxNellieGail project last month, we’re back to share more about the transformations in some of our favorite spaces. First up, the formal living room! The first room you see when you enter the home, this living room needed a lot of attention. Our goal was to turn it into a space that our clients would want to spend time in and entertain in. Keep scrolling to see what this space looked like when we got our hands on it back in 2019, and what it looks like today after our living room renovation!
Before

As you can see from these before photos, there were a few key structural items that required our design team’s attention. The first is the tricky roofline that made the original space feel awkward and angular. We opted to raise the roofline and update the existing front window to tie the space together with the entry and create a nook for a cozy window seat. Overhead, we wrapped the ceiling above the window in the same whitewashed natural pine material as the entryway and front exterior overhangs.

Once the framing was updated, we moved on to the fireplace design. We love a fireplace as a focal point in a formal living room space. S,o we kept the existing fireplace and just updated the facade to make it fit the traditional-meets-moody style of the new space. A dark slab surround and millwork mantel were the perfect recipe for a dramatic design centerpiece.
After

If you know us, you know that custom cabinetry is our love language. So, no living room is complete for us without a beautiful built-in. We designed this wall-to-wall built-in to house our clients’ baby grand piano and collection of antique books. It creates a library feel in the space that we just love! We opted for the same dark charcoal paint color as the fireplace mantel, and added pretty brass hardware for warmth.

Last but not least, our team sourced the perfect furnishings to complete the design. We were inspired by darker tones, playful prints, and lots of cozy textures. The furniture in the space takes on an English cottage vibe with feminine curves and spindles, along with dainty floral prints. A transitional black and brass chandelier draws your eye upwards, and a subtle plaid custom rug grounds the entire design.

What’s your favorite part of this living room renovation? We’re just smitten with the window seat transformation! Stay tuned for more before and afters from this home coming soon to the blog.
