We love styling the coffee tables in our projects to feel functional and casual, but still refined and collected. Today on the mgd log, we’re sharing our favorite tips on how to style a coffee table along with a curated collection of objects that would look great in any space. Keep scrolling, and treat yourself to a new styling object (or two)!
01 / Coffee Table Must-Haves
In our styling book, every coffee table needs greenery, whether it’s in a vase, urn, vessel, or bowl. It adds texture and a pop of color to a neutral space. If you opt for real plants, don’t miss our houseplant care tips! If you’re lacking a green thumb, faux always works too.
From there, add a decorative object like a bell, knot, or candle. We’re always saving new favorites in our affiliate shop if you need a few ideas. Next, add a tray or bowl as a catch-all, and most importantly, books! Styling books are a must in every space, so stock up on your favorite titles and books that bring you joy. 02 / Coffee Table Layering
It’s important to make sure you play with height, texture, and different shapes when styling a coffee table. For height, try purchasing larger vases and layering objects with books. However, avoid layering same-size or larger objects on top of smaller objects. It’s a common mistake that can make a space feel unbalanced! Your bottom layer of objects should be your largest and heaviest ones, and you should gradually get lighter as you style upwards.
03 / Coffee Table Shapes
When thinking about how to style a coffee table, it’s crucial to create different shapes. If you have a rectangular coffee table, don’t get all square decor pieces! Expand your shapes with different accessories like trays, bowls, vases, coasters, and decorative objects.
As a general rule, we often find that rectangular tables look best with 4 groupings while circular coffee tables look best with 3.
