Our Favorite California Boutique Hotels

Fall is one of the most beautiful seasons in California, and there’s nothing better than experiencing it throughout all different parts of the state. With that in mind, we’re journeying up the California coast, highlighting a few of our favorite boutique hotels along the way. We hope you feel inspired to plan your own weekend getaway for the books!

San Diego, CA

This modern hotel in the heart of San Diego is the perfect landing pad for an adventurous weekend in the city. It has clean and modern rooms, a vintage-inspired bar, and the cutest outdoor terrace that will have you feeling like you’re dining al fresco in Europe.

Laguna Beach, CA

This locals’ favorite is centrally located in Laguna Beach, making it the perfect Southern California stay. It has an eclectic and beachy feel, ocean views, and an abundance of outdoor offerings to do when you want to switch it up after spending endless hours lounging at the pool.

Malibu, CA

This roadside hotel sits right on the Pacific Ocean in the heart of Malibu, and because of that, has the most swoon-worthy rooftop to hang at. Silver Lake Pool & Inn /

Los Angeles, CA

This new kid on the block in LA is a design lover’s dream, with so many cute corners and lounge areas. It’s in the heart of Silver Lake, which means it’s situated in a foodie and shoppers paradise, and the pool area is one that you could relax at for hours on end.


La Serena Villas /

Palm Springs, CA

This adults-only resort is the definition of elegance. It has an incredible pool, great onsite restaurant, and is located central to downtown so has a great walkability factor. If you’re in the mood to really treat yourself — go here!


Hotel Ynez /

Solvang, CA

While this hotel hasn’t opened up officially yet, word on the street is that it is going to be the most amazing place to stay. We’re counting down the days until we can pack our bags to go here!


Skyview Los Alamos /

Los Alamos, CA

We’ve already professed our love for the wine-country town of Los Alamos, and so it should be no surprise that we are including one of the cutest little spots there on this list. This reimagined hotel sits on a hill overlooking wine country, and it boasts a great happy hour with lots of local varieties. Plus, it’s a short distance to all sorts of vineyards, tasting rooms, vintage shopping, and restaurants.


San Luis Creek Lodge /

San Luis Obispo, CA

This newly opened space in San Luis Obispo is the definition of California cool. It has major farmhouse-meets-boho vibes, and is the kind of place where every single detail was looked at with a thoughtful lens. Plus, San Luis Obispo is home to one of the most renowned wine regions in the world and has the most quaint, laid-back vibes.


White Water Cambria /

Moonstone Beach, CA

Opening in the fall, this revitalized roadside motel is high on our list. It’s located in Moonstone Beach, which is centrally-located and the perfect stopover town on a road trip up the coast.


The Hotel Carmel /

Carmel by the Sea, CA

If you find yourself in the enchanting little town of Carmel by the Sea, make sure to book a stay at Hotel Carmel. It’s filled with the most delightful rooms, outdoor patio, and attached restaurant. You’ll never want to leave the property, but make sure you do because the town of Carmel is filled with gem after gem.


San Francisco Proper /

San Francisco, CA

It’s no surprise that we’re big fans of the entire Proper hotels line, and their San Francisco property is no exception. Designed by the one and only Kelly Wearstler, it’s elevated and moody, refined and unique. Do yourself a favor and make sure you experience the rooftop bar: with the best views of the city, it’s an amazing place to spend a few hours at.


MacArthur Place /

Sonoma, CA

This charming hotel is located right in the middle of Sonoma Square, so is walkable to all of the best tasting rooms, restaurants, and weekly farmers market. It’s homey, quaint, and full of well-designed corners and details.


Autocamp Yosemite /

Midpines, CA

This fun property located right outside of Yosemite National Park has a little something for everyone — with small cabins, Airstream trailers, and luxury tents, it’s most certainly a unique experience in the woods that will leave you feeling refreshed.


The Coachman Hotel /

Lake Tahoe, CA

If you find yourself in the Lake Tahoe area and are wanting to opt out of the traditional camping route, look no further than The Coachman Hotel. It has a rustic design, amazing bar inside, and outdoor patio with fireplaces that will give you all of the cabin feels.
