Our favorite spaces are those that are timeless and sophisticated, but have an unexpected dose of charm. Heather Taylor’s collection of striped and gingham linens and home goods always add joy to the rooms they’re in, and we’re so excited to be interviewing her on our interior design blog today. You may recognize a few of her pieces from our projects – They’re hard to miss, after all! With a sweet shop in Los Angeles and an exclusive collection with West Elm, it’s safe to say that Heather Taylor is making waves in the design space. Keep reading to learn more about her background and to read her three tips for the perfect table setting.
01 / It’s no secret that we love your work and often incorporate your pieces into the spaces we design! Could you share a little about your creative background?
I’ve always loved craft and making things with my hands (there are many embroidered pillows, collages and pressed flowers still floating around my parents house). In college I studied Art History and became inspired by the women of the Bauhaus Weaving Workshops. Soon after college I moved to New York and did a deep dive into the fiber arts where I learned to knit, crochet and weave. A passion was born!
02 / How did you find your signature aesthetic?
I’ve always been drawn to the classics and I love the idea of freshening up stripes, ginghams and plaids by using unexpected color combinations. Our designs are influenced by the colors and patterns that I want to see in my own home.
03 / Your spring collection embodies that fresh feeling that the new season brings. What was your inspiration for the color palette and pieces in your latest launch?
We wanted to focus on colors that make people really happy – light, bright, joyful!
04 / One of our favorite things about Heather Taylor Home is that each piece is instantly recognizable, yet still feels very of-the-moment. How do you stay inspired to keep creating new pieces?
I’ve always been a big reader, movie watcher, art lover, experience-seeker type of person. I think inspiration comes from keeping your eyes open.
05 / Do you have a favorite project or textile you’ve ever worked on?
Hard to pick a favorite but our Ruffle Pillows are up there! A game changer item for our collection and something that I personally can’t get enough of.
06 / When you’re not working, what does your day-to-day look like?
Coffee, needlepoint and a podcast before my daughters wake up. A great day includes a walk with a friend. Then some fun adventure with my husband and girls – usually a hike or a beach day. The day ends with setting the table for dinner (even if it’s takeout we always pull out some pretty linens) and eating together as a family.
07 / Your exclusive collection with West Elm is so good! What’s next for Heather Taylor Home?
We are expanding into a few new categories this year with a focus on kids.
Psst… Head here to shop the collection.
08 / The table linens in your collection are designed to make every day feel like a celebration. Could you share 3 tips with our readers on how to put together the perfect table setting?
1. Never skip a centerpiece even if it’s a bowl of citrus you stole from your kitchen.
2. Mix patterns in complimentary colors to add a bit of intrigue to your table.
3. Candles, candles, candles!
